It is isolated, and until recently, could only be reached from Belize. Although still not easy, it can now be accessed from Xcalak in southern Mexico.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Chinchorro is part of the Mesoamerican reef system. It&#8217;s the largest and one of the healthiest atolls in the northern hemisphere. The Mexican government has declared this site an Archaeological Marine Sanctuary due to the many colonial-era and steamboat wrecks (almost 200, but most are protected and cannot be dived) that have run aground. The atoll is also renowned for its excellent dive sites characterised by a great variety of flora and fauna. One of the most interesting species inhabiting this atoll is the crocodile!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-gallery columns-2 is-cropped wp-block-gallery-2 is-layout-flex wp-block-gallery-is-layout-flex\"><ul class=\"blocks-gallery-grid\"><li class=\"blocks-gallery-item\"><figure><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.pazola.com\/\/uploads\/40e663c590eb420373b2f90262343022d2e8a6c8.jpg\" alt=\"\" data-id=\"\"\/><\/figure><\/li><li class=\"blocks-gallery-item\"><figure><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.pazola.com\/\/uploads\/47f4459aa55e63ca16a3a4d0dc7526ee851bfba6.jpg\" alt=\"\" data-id=\"\"\/><\/figure><\/li><li class=\"blocks-gallery-item\"><figure><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.pazola.com\/\/uploads\/bb093cc5dc4ae5334ec94c820c9679448085ea97.jpg\" alt=\"\" data-id=\"\"\/><\/figure><\/li><\/ul><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Our trip will be led by the world-renowned underwater photographer Jakob DeGee<\/strong>, a graduate of the Warsaw Academy of Photography, specialising in&#8230; shark portraits! The winner of many prestigious photography competitions, including Underwater Photographer of the Year, GDT European Photographer of the Year, Hasselblad X You, Ocean Geographic Pictures of the Year, and many more. Jakob specialises in a rather unique field \u2014 photographing large underwater animals at an <strong>incredibly <\/strong>close range! <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>His work is enjoyed worldwide, and you&#8217;ll be able to watch him in action. He&#8217;ll be happy to share his knowledge and talents during our trip to Banco Chinchorro!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.pazola.com\/\/uploads\/c33ae0b2d1d0edfbd678c9b5e70a81136dd52d55.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Chinchorro Atoll<\/strong> is a continuous reef with 6 entrances leading to the shallows (max. 5m) and a handful of small islands. There are no permanent residents \u2014 literally a few wooden huts on stilts where local fishermen stay. Less than your basic standard but adventure with a capital &#8220;A&#8221;!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The waters surrounding the atoll are very deep, dropping to depths of up to 1000m, inviting all kinds of species. Flora and fauna are abundant: turtles, sea anemones, over 20 species of sponge, sharks, groupers, beautiful coral arrays, eagle rays, lobsters, and a rainbow of coloured fish.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-gallery columns-2 is-cropped wp-block-gallery-3 is-layout-flex wp-block-gallery-is-layout-flex\"><ul class=\"blocks-gallery-grid\"><li class=\"blocks-gallery-item\"><figure><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.pazola.com\/\/uploads\/31b00a443fc79b3831fe18483b93385135ca7d1d.jpg\" alt=\"\" data-id=\"\"\/><\/figure><\/li><li class=\"blocks-gallery-item\"><figure><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.pazola.com\/\/uploads\/f04e12983e41e7de6620ab6887b84e7a852d5036.jpg\" alt=\"\" data-id=\"\"\/><\/figure><\/li><\/ul><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Banco Chichorro was known only to a tight circle of adventure travellers for many years. The difficult access (2.5 hours at sea in a small boat) and spartan conditions don&#8217;t exactly encourage mass tourism \u2014 just what we want! Those who do decide to make an effort can be sure to experience one of the Caribbean&#8217;s best-kept diving secrets! The logistics aren&#8217;t straightforward, but access is now possible \u2014 we will even arrange permits from the Mexican Federal Government! About 700 divers a year venture into the area, so the reef is in excellent condition, considering it covers 600 square kilometres! Our partner in the area is the only company with permission to take people diving with the crocodiles. Rest after the journey.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Day 2<\/strong> \u2014 After breakfast we\u2019ll go diving in two of the local cenotes!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-gallery columns-2 is-cropped wp-block-gallery-6 is-layout-flex wp-block-gallery-is-layout-flex\"><ul class=\"blocks-gallery-grid\"><li class=\"blocks-gallery-item\"><figure><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.pazola.com\/\/uploads\/d1efc1286f71fc0615007f512d0c49efbf0cbfe9.jpg\" alt=\"\" data-id=\"\"\/><\/figure><\/li><li class=\"blocks-gallery-item\"><figure><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.pazola.com\/\/uploads\/57aeb4a2054e2efb78a982938cd74f4f06322ce5.jpg\" alt=\"\" data-id=\"\"\/><\/figure><\/li><li class=\"blocks-gallery-item\"><figure><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.pazola.com\/\/uploads\/e38306448076ce9b47b20c9b8b6218485def82e1.jpg\" alt=\"\" data-id=\"\"\/><\/figure><\/li><\/ul><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Day 3<\/strong> \u2014 Two more cenotes to dive today. In the afternoon, relaxing on the beach.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Day 4<\/strong> \u2014 We pack ourselves (and our stuff!) into a car and make the five hour journey south to Xcalak.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Day 5<\/strong> \u2014 A couple of dives and relaxing by the sea.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Day 6<\/strong> \u2014 Today, we hire a power generator, buy lots of water, and board a local fisherman&#8217;s (narrow) boat, who will take us to Chinchorro Atoll (about 2.5 hours). There can be some seaspray \u2014 bring a rain jacket! On arrival, we set up in our stilted hut in the shallow lagoon. The hut is sparsely furnished; there is a toilet, no running water, and electricity for only a couple of hours a day. Its elevated position above the water will protect us from the crocodiles \u2014 the perfect place for a real diving adventurer to relax!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.pazola.com\/\/uploads\/581708510fab86bbdc1b40e41b2a8c226d7c20f2.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Today we enter the water in search of crocodiles \u2014 the adventure has begun.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Day 7<\/strong> \u2014 More crocodile searching. Sometimes, it&#8217;s as if they&#8217;re loitering, in wait, outside the hut; other times, they might not show up for 24 hours. Whatever the case, there are plenty about, we&#8217;ll see them for sure!
