North Korea and the Great Wall of China

Mystery, exotic beauty, architectural wonders, delicious cuisine, and… the odd dragon? China and North Korea - we’re excited to offer you the chance of experiencing these fascinating nations.

The trip starts in China, a land of many records! The highest peak - Mount Everest on the border with Nepal, the longest river in Asia - the Yangtze, the largest mushroom cultivator in the world, and… um… the largest McDonalds in the world - seating capacity of 700!

During our stay, we’ll see if a few preconceptions hold true. Is the capital’s metro really so crowded? Is the Peking duck incredibly delicate? Is it true you'll see smartly dressed business people riding around on bikes? Let’s discover together!

The mysterious and obscure North Korea makes up the second part of the trip. The Korean peninsula, as seen from space, shows the North as one dark region except for the illuminating lights of the capital Pyongyang (Google it, it’s quite striking!). Despite the difficulties this country has been facing for years, it is more than propaganda and press reports. North Korea is a nation of over 20 million people with tremendous historical and cultural heritage. Korea was artificially divided by the USSR and USA after World War Two. Despite attempts by the United Nations to reunify North and South, a solution that would satisfy the conflicting ideals of Russia and America could not be found. After the collapse of the USSR, North Korea is one of the last countries to hold on to the communist principles promoted by the fallen union. We have a chance to see first-hand how the nation endures under this system.

North Korea is the only place in the world that is governed by the unique philosophy of “Juche”. It was originally developed by the country’s first leader, and father of the nation, Kim Il Sung in 1955. The word loosely translates to “self-sufficiency”, both political and economic. Outside North Korea, some see this more as a religious movement because of its cult of personality surrounding the country’s leaders. The ideology permeates to all levels: state, nation, territory, culture and people - all-embracing. It even determines the local calendar, the first year is 1912 when Kim Il Sung was born! A trip to this country will help unravel some of its mysteries, perhaps giving us a chance to form our own opinions. As we gain a deeper understanding, we can reflect on how history and politics have moulded the lives of Korean people for generations.

Wieża Idei Dżucze

Why visit North Korea?

  • Visit the sacred site of Myohyangsan, which, according to legend, is the home of King Tangun, forefather of the Korean people.
  • Climb Kumgansang (Diamond Mountain) and discover ancient Buddhist temples built on this rugged 80-kilometre mountain range.
  • Relax with a book at Inmin Taehak Supdang (The Grand People’s Study House). As North Korea’s intellectual treasure, this main library is also breathtaking architecturally.
  • Don’t be surprised by the interest of the locals. Years of isolation have seen them cut off from the outside world - now they want to make up for it.
  • A great opportunity to talk, share views, and make new friends.
  • There are very few cars, and traffic jams are rear - a chance to immerse yourself in unspoiled nature. We’ll encounter numerous recreational areas, walking paths, holiday camps, well-groomed parks and squares. You’ll notice the residents taking care of their own surroundings!
  • Try the local cuisine. Number one on the list is Pyongyang’s speciality of cold noodles. Along with hot soups and rice, there are a variety of flavours to try out.

ITINERARY

Day 1 - Departure from Warsaw to Beijing, with transfers.

Day 2 - We touchdown in Beijing and are welcomed at the airport before transferring to our hotel. Some time to rest after the journey before heading out in the afternoon to see a few of this capital’s iconic sights. We’ll visit Tiananmen Square, named after the Tiananmen (“Gate of Heavenly Peace”) located at its north. This is the largest square in the world. Here we’ll find a monument to the People’s Heroes and the mausoleum of Mao Zedong. Every day at sunrise, a flag of the People’s Republic of China is raised in the square.

From here, we enter straight into the Forbidden City. This was the imperial palace from the Ming dynasty to the end of the Qing dynasty. As you enter, you’ll see why this impressive complex is on the UNESCO World Heritage List. Legend has it that there are as many as 9,999 rooms! The name “Forbidden City” comes from a time when entering and leaving the complex was only allowed with the emperor’s permission. Today, it’s open to all!

The last place we see is the Temple of Heaven. Another piece of striking architecture, this 15th-century complex of Taoist religious buildings is situated in the south-eastern area of the city. It was once visited yearly by emperors of the Ming and Qing dynasties to pray for good harvests. The doors weren’t open to tourists until 1912.

After a busy day, it’s time to head back to our hotel for some well-deserved rest.

Zakazane Miasto

Day 3 - First some breakfast, then a cable car ride to China’s most recognisable and famous landmark - The Great Wall. We visit Badaling, the best-preserved and most complete section of this New Seventh Wonder of the World. The Great Wall of China is the largest human-made structure on earth, a symbol of strength and power. It was constructed using resources of the surrounding terrain, so intermittently along this stunning 10 km section, we find numerous gorges and cliffs created by the extraction of raw materials.

Wielki mur ma ponad 21 tysięcy kilometrów długości!Wcale go nie widać z kosmosu, niestety.

On our return, we have a chance to admire (from the outside) another impressive human-made structure - the Olympic Stadium, or the “Bird’s Nest” as it’s affectionately known. This is where the athletics took place during the 2008 Olympic games. The design of this complex structure was a collaboration between Swiss and Chineses architects with inspiration for its intricate construction coming from Chinese porcelain - fragile, delicate and precious. The Olympic Games swimming events were held on the same site in the “Water Cube”, you’ll spot it quickly, it’s another architectural masterpiece. Recent years have seen it transformed into a water park. Is some of that Olympic legacy starting to rub off…

We then return to our hotel with the rest of the day free.

Wielki Mur Chiński

Kostka LoduPtasie Gniazdo

Day 4 - Today is a chance to overload our senses! We can try some tasty Gokouji snacks and visit the famous, fragrant and colourful Beijing markets. Full of flowers, exotic birds and all kinds of treats! After a possibly overwhelming experience, we’ll head back to our hotel for some relaxation! You can spend your free time taking some last photos, going for a quiet walk, or just sitting-back!

Day 5 - Late morning, we transfer to the airport for our 13:00 departure to Pyongyang. We touchdown at around 16:00 where our guides welcome us, and the sightseeing begins! First up is the Mansudae Grand Monument depicting the previous two presidents of the country, Kim Il Sung and Kim Jong-il. Tradition dictates that we place a small bouquet at the foot of the monument. Next is a walk in the park and a chance to see the Arch of Triumph. It’s then time to transfer to our hotel for dinner and a well-deserved rest.

Pomnik MansundaePlac Kim Il Sunga

Day 6 - Another day full of activity! Before noon, we visit Kumsusan Palace of the Sun, only open two days a week to tourists. The palace is the mausoleum of the great founding father Kim Il Sung, and Kim Jong Il, his son and successor. Next, we move on to the fascinating Pyongyang Folklore Park. Located at the foot of the mountain Taesongsan, this amusement park is divided into areas that represent different stages of Korean culture and history, from ancient through medieval to modern times.

We have lunch back at our hotel before the busy day continues with a walk on Moran Hill, a chance to meet some locals enjoying their free time! After that, it’s a visit to the Mangyongdae neighbourhood, said to be the birthplace of Kim Il Sung. From there, a Pyongyang subway experience as we make our way to dinner at the Chongryu Hotpot Restaurant - we cook our dinner on tiny gas stoves! After satisfying our stomachs, some entertainment in the Kaeson Youth Park with its many exciting rides - take your pick!

After a long day, we return to our hotel where the rest of the evening is free.

Kumsusan - Pałac SłońcaPomnik przed Wieżą Dżucze

Day 7 - After breakfast, a four and a half-hour drive to the city of Wonsan. Interestingly, the spatial development plan of this city was co-authored by Polish architect and urban planner Stefan Słoński! The journey is broken up by a half-hour stop in the picturesque area of Sinpyong. The official word is that the Great Leader himself liked to relax here, and was so impressed, he ordered the construction of a resort for the workers of nearby factories!

Jezioro Sinpyong

After lunch, we take in the glorious sights of North Korea’s most stunning mountain range - Kumgansang (the Diamond Mountains). Buddhist temples are dotted throughout the area. We’ll then visit the well equipped Hundai Sungwoo ski resort (admission is 25 euros per person).

A lake walk with views of the setting sun before we travel to Sijung. Sitting on the shores of Lake Sijung, this beautiful village is where we’ll have dinner and stay overnight.

Góry Diamentowe - Kumgang

Day 8 - The attractions go on! Today is more idyllic, starting with the shores of the beautiful Changja River - a chance to cool off! We’ll also see some of the agricultural cooperatives that form the economic basis of this region. We then head back to Wonsan, on the shores of the Sea of Japan. Here we visit the Oriental Park, main city square and surrounding area.

Day 9 - We make our way towards Pyongyang, stopping at one of North Korea’s natural treasures - the splendid Ulim Waterfalls. Once back in the capital, we go for lunch, and then those willing can go up the Juche Tower for a city panorama. From here, we’re just a few steps from the monument commemorating the founders of the party. We’ll then head into the heart of the city marked by Kim Il Sung Square. This is where the great military parades and national celebrations take place. Today, the area will make for a quiet sightseeing walk and an opportunity for some shopping. After a full day, we return to our hotel before dinner at the Yanggakdo Chinese Restaurant (a chance to try something new perhaps?)

Day 10 - Departure from Pyongyang as we fly back to Beijing. Transfer to our hotel and rest.

Day 11 - Departure to Warsaw.

Day 12 - Touchdown in Warsaw.

End of trip.

Sayed Kassm

Sayed is one of the longest-serving members of the PAZOLA family. Despite the length of time with us, he still has the same youthful exuberance as the first Egyptian dive safari he led in 2007! Now heading up the team in Egypt, you’ll meet him on all our safaris to that area. A man you can count on in any situation, always calm, always professional. Very conscious of diver welfare underwater and very experienced - over 15,000 Red Sea dives. He’s visited every reef over 100 times! Sayed is a happy father of three children :)

Hamada Hessian

Hamada has almost worked with us for as long as Sayed, and you’ll find him on nearly all our Egyptian safaris. A gentle character and a mature diver often sought out by beginners. Well renowned for his care and concern underwater. A laid-back guy, nothing’s a problem, always willing to help. Hamada is a man you want around both above and below water!

SONAM JAMTHSO – nasz człowiek w Bhutanie.

I was born into a family of yak farmers and my childhood memories are filled with magnificent mountains, furry animals, and wonderful nature, but also hard work, and the cold. I always knew I wanted to combine my life with tourism, so at the age of 16, I began work caring for horses as a trekking assistant. After graduating from school, I became a licensed English-speaking guide in the Kingdom of Bhutan. I take great pleasure in showing visitors the beauty of my country and bringing its culture and history closer. I have great respect for my homeland which has made me who I am. I’m proud of being Bhutanese and you too will fall in love with our wonderful Kingdom. Come visit! From PAZOLA.com: Sonam is our Bhutanese star. He has exceptional knowledge of his country, is caring, level-headed and calm. Always faces challenges with a smile on his face. Our clients invariably come back from Bhutan delighted with his service!

Michał Sieczkowski

A lawyer by education but the lure of food and travel was too great, his passions won out and instead of finding himself behind a desk he finds himself trotting the globe in search of his next adventure fix. A diving instructor for more than a dozen years, he has an open mind that's hungry to learn about new places and chase new experiences. Comfortable finding his way around a kitchen, he is forever searching for new flavours and culinary inspiration from the farthest corners of the earth. Favourite dish - fried stonefish, feels best - in the Raja Ampat Islands, hobby - a passionate motorcyclist who loves the wind in his hair. Michał's philosophy in life can be summed up: I can't do it? Hold my drink, I'll show you!

Bartosz Pszczółkowski

A geologist by profession and traveller by passion. Bartosz is an experienced diver, gaining his instructor experience in numerous centres including the Canary Islands, Norway and Sardinia. You’ll find him getting by in either Polish, English, Italian, Spanish or Portuguese! During his free time, Bartosz likes to plunge into Polish lakes and admire their beautiful green surroundings. He enjoys exploring caves on foot and finding places within them to dive. It’s unusual to see him without a camera - ready to capture those interesting and unique moments. A glass half full man, with a beaming smile!

Dom Lee Zaax

Dom has started his scuba diving adventure in the cold waters of the Baltic Sea at an early age of nine. Nowadays, he is a global nomad who enjoys soaking up the sun, exploring new destinations and diving whenever it is possible. On the never-ending quest for the unknown, the different, and the untouched. Travel professional with over two decades of experience within the airlines and tour operating industry. His passion for travel and underwater explorations, as well as a constant drive to promote his beloved sport, landed him as a partner at a Copenhagen based publisher of scuba diving magazines. Dom feels at home almost everywhere as he has spent a vast amount of time travelling the world. So far, he has visited over seventy countries and territories, and became an expert on diving in South East Asia and the Far East where he has made his previous, longer than usual “stopovers”. Just recently he has decided to settle down in Aqaba, the sunniest corner of the Red Sea.
His guilty pleasures involve a good book, world cinema and strolling side streets and dark alleys of big cities with his camera.
Bump into him somewhere out there... under the sun, out in the sea, on a boat, or most likely - just underneath it!

Piotr F. Pazola

A passionate foodie, willing to devour almost anything! Has merged his love for globe-trotting with running a successful and unique travel company since 2000. A highly experienced diving instructor with over 8,000 dives, and well over 300 expeditions and diving safaris all over the world to his name. A true explorer who has discovered new diving sites including the Polish Window in the Bligh Waters of Fiji, the Polish Reef in Western Papua, the Polish Bommies in New Guinea, and the Polish Fingers in the Saudi Arabian Red Sea. A Galapagos expert after conducting a staggering 19 trips to the famous and beautiful islands in the Pacific. Piotr combines his love of diving with his love of photography, both on and under the water. He is the creator of the first 3D, animated, multimedia underwater guide to the Red Sea. This man of the world, despite his roaming nature, has lived 6 years in the United Kingdom and 12 years in Egypt. Oh, and he speaks 5 languages too. Feels at home anywhere, from Alice Springs, Hobart or Mammoth Lakes, to Luang Prabang, Cusco or Pohnpei. And during his free time… well, he travels and plans new expeditions to offer the world, of course!
